Wagner College Theatre’s Christina DeCicco takes on Eva in Evita Full Time
Most Definitely No One is Crying for Argentina. Success from the nationally accredited Wagner College Theatre program is nothing new to the theatre world especially right here in New York City. And while Wagner College theatre has seen its share of success within the past few years, a recent announcement is giving this program highest honors all around. It has been announced Christina DeCicco, who is the Eva Alernate in the current Broadway revival of Evita, will take on the role full time this summer for a limited engagment during Elena Roger’s vacation.
Christina DeCicco is a Wagner College alumni and a product of the nationally accredited theatre program which each year consistently ranks within the Top 5 Theatre Programs in the Nation, as reviewed by The Princeton Review. She graduated from Wagner in 2002. She starred as Glinda in the national tour of Wicked and most recently made her Broadway debut last year in Sister Act. Earlier this year, she left Sister Act to join the current Broadway revival of Evita where she stars as the Eva Peron alternate playing all Wednesday night performances and Saturday matinees.
Evita is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical is based off the real life story of Argentine political leader Eva Peron and her marriage to Argentine president, Juan Peron. According to a press release, Evita is about Eva Perón who used her smarts and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world — while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. Evita tells Eva’s passionate and unforgettable true story, and features some of theater’s most beautiful songs, including “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “High Flying, Adored.”
During the course of Summer 2012, Elena Roger, who currently plays the title role of Eva in Evita, will be taking vacation during the time periods of July 12–19 and August 11–18 2012. During these weeks, Christina DeCicco, who usually covers Wednesday evening and Saturday matinee performances will take on the leading role full time. She will be covered by the new Eva alternate covering her Wednesday evenings and Saturday matinees, Jessica Lea Patty. Patty has been seen in Broadway productions such as The Addams Family, People in the Picture, 9 to 5, A Chorus Line and The Boy from Oz.
When asked about her favorite moment in Evita on Broadway, DeCicco responded with the following statement;
“I think I’ve performed my 22nd show, so while the show has been going on a few months now, and everybody else is coming up to their 100th performance, I’m still kind of in my preview period. I try to remember every moment and try to take it all in and experience it because it’s still so new to me. I think because the show has been up and running, everyone thinks that I’ve been part of that all along, but it’s been a very different experience for me. It’s just such a hard story to tell that each difficult moment as it comes, “Oh! This is my favorite. No, no… This is my favorite… No! This is the best part!” So I don’t know if I can single out one single moment”
