Haven’t Got A Prayer; Sister Act to Close on Broadway
Take Me to Heaven! One of the most popular songs of the hit Broadway musical Sister Act, may now also be a request for some of Broadway’s newest performers to receive bad news this week. It seems as though the closing notices just keep rolling in!(Especially for all these religious shows too). Today, producers of the hit Broadway musical Sister Act announced the production would close on Broadway.
Sister Act is a Broadway musical that features music by Alan Menken with lyrics by Glenn Slater with book by Douglas Carter Beane, Cheri and Bill Steinkellner. The musical has been described in the follow way: “When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won’t be found – a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood.”
Producers have announced Sister Act will close on Broadway August 26th, 2012. The news of Sister Act closing joins on to the week filled with many show closings and oddly enough, many of them being related to his holy self above! Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar have also just recently announced upcoming closing dates. Sister Act is currently playing at The Broadway Theatre where it opened with previews on March 24th, 2011 and officially opened April 20th, 2012. By the time the production closes on Broadway, it will have played 28 previews and 561 performances. But that is definitely not the end of Sister Act in the theatre world.
Sister Act transferred to Broadway in 2011 after the London production received much praise and success when that kick off back in 2009. The Broadway musical was nominated for 5 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, but did not win any of those. However, the press for the Broadway production of Sister Act was very positive. What did they say?
However, it seems as though that the great reviews and positive feedback Sister Act has gained in its time on Broadway will not be enough to keep this holy house open much longer.
Most recently, Sister Act even tried to bring in some star power that many other Broadway shows either use to try to save themselves or thrive off of. The cast currently features Raven-Symoné as Deloris Van Cartier, Tony nominee Carolee Carmello as Mother Superior, Fred Applegate as Monsignor, Sarah Bolt as Sister Mary Patrick, John Treacy Eganas Joey, Demond Green as TJ, Chester Gregory as Eddie, Kingsley Leggs as Curtis, Marla Mindelle as Sister Mary Robert, Audrie Neenan as Sister Mary Lazarus and Caesar Samayoa as Pablo.
Currently, a national tour of the production is set to kick off this October in Toronto! There are also productions planned for Paris in September 2012, Stuttgart in December 2012, Scheveningen, Holland in March, 2013 as well as Moscow, Madrid, Prague, Sao Paolo, South Korea, and Japan.
