Is Anastasia Headed to the Stage?
Have you heard!? There’s a rumor…on Broadway? Yes Folks, while rumors of new Broadway shows seem to appear and fade as much as clouds in the sky, one Broadway rumor (And dream for some) has just gotten a bit more legit in the books for us! There is a new buzz on the streets of New York that the hit film Anastasia may be making it’s way to the stage not only in New York but soon Broadway.
Anastasia is a animated musical adventure drama film that first appeared in 1997. Anastasia is a movie based on the story is inspired by an urban legend which claimed that Anastasia, the youngest daughter of Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, in fact survived the execution of her family. The movie was directed and produced by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. All songs in the movie were written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. The movie includes such hit songs as “A Rumor in St. Petersburg”, “Journey to the Past”, “Learn to Do It” and “Once Upon a December”.
Anastasia received positive acknowledgement all around from critics and the public alike. The hit movie even scored in its home country of Russia, despite the fact that the creators took major creative liberties in Russian history. The movie budget was low and with an overall success coming in, Anastasia scored at the box office big time. To date, Anastasia is the most successful movie from Don Bluth and Fox Animation Studios still in history. Many have claimed the movie had a “Disney” touch to it and even pointed out that it should get the stage treatment since it such a great musical at that. Well, it seems as though the call today has finally been answered. The rumor in St. Petersburg has headed to the streets of New York.
