London Lookout: Spice Girls Musical Beginning to Take Shape in West End
Spice Up Your Life! Oh yes, it seems as though the West End theatre scene will take those words to heart as the upcoming season looks to be the roots of a new musical that will be sure to spice up the West End. Yes, thats right folks! Your favorite group, the Spice Girls, are soon to be forever mortalized in a musical ! Today Luner on Theatre is bringing you the details of that new Spice Girls musical titled Viva Forever.
Viva Forever is a new musical by Jennifer Saunders that will feature about 16 songs of the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls are Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm and Melanie Brown respectively as Ginger, Baby, Posh, Sporty and Scary. The musical will reportedly carry a mother daughter story at its heart and a television talent show will be the background for the new musical. The show is set to features some of your favorite Spice Girls hits such as “Wannabe,” “The Lady Is A Vamp,” “Who Do You Think You Are” and “Mamma.”
We are slowly finding out more details about the productions future life in the West End. According to a new source, previews will begin in November and it will officially open in December. The show will find its home at The Piccadilly Theatre. This means the current show running there, Ghost the Musical, will shutter later this season on the West End. We have also learned some of the creative team for this new musical
Viva Forever is set to be produced by Judy Craymer, who is best known for being behind the world wide hit musical Mamma Mia! The show will be directed by Paul Garrington with Lynn Page on board as choreographer. Peter Mackintosh will serve as master designer and Martin Koch as orchestrator for the entire piece. We will do not know of any casting yet for this new production. However, it is believed auditions for the show will begin at some point later this month in England.
I will have to admit how truly excited I am to see what this new Spice Girls musical ends up amounting into. The Spice Girls, like so many other bands over time, became an iconic band with songs people today of their generation still know and love to sing to. I do have to say I truly believe a successful run of Viva Forever in England will ensure a transfer of this production to Broadway at some later time. The Spice Girls musical is large, loud and will certainly be brought to life on stage bigger then ever before!
