Katie Finneran to Star as Miss Hannigan in Broadway Revival of Annie

We love you Miss Hannigan! Oh yes we do! As the Broadway Fall 2012 races towards us it seems like an out of control train, the Broadway revival of Annie seems as though it will be here Tomorrow! (HA!) And it seems as though if anyone had doubt about this new upcoming revival of Annie, all matters have been cleared. Producers have officially annonced Katie Finneran will star as Miss Hannigan in this upcoming Broadway revival.

Annie is a musical that features music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and a book by Thomas Meehan. The musical is based after the hit comic strip, Little Orphan Annie, and opened on Broadway in 1977 to rave reviews. The musical follows one little girl (Annie) who lives in an orphanage as she works to find out who her real parents are. She does this with the help of a man who adopts her, Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks, and his assistant Grace Farrell. Together, they work through triumph and tragedy to find out the truth behind Annie’s parents and discover love along the way. The revival of Annie will receive a revised book by original writer Thomas Meehan.

Katie Finneran is a Tony Award winning actress who was most recently seen on Broadway in the revival of Promises, Promises as Marge. For this role, she received a Tony Award as well as a Tony Award for her role in the recent Broadway revival of Noises Off. She is loved not only by the New York audiences but theatre critics as well for her onstage performances which continue to amze audiences. Her previous Broadway credits include Mauritius, Cabaret, The Iceman Cometh, Neil Simon’s Proposals, The Heiress, In the Summer House, My Favorite Year, Two Shakespearean Actors and On Borrowed Time.

Finneran is thrilled to be playing the infamous in this upcoming Broadway revival of Annie. When asked about it, she has been quoted as saying:

“Miss Hannigan is one of the great musical comedy roles and I cannot wait to play her, in all of her deliciously evil glory. I played Hannigan in my parents’ living room when I was eight years old and the chance to play her in this new Broadway production is a dream come true.”

Producers only decided to break the news this past week after rumors about the casting were beginning to spread and they themselves wanted to reveal their golden ace of casting.

I truly could not agree more with the choice of Finneran to play Miss Hannigan in this upcoming revival. She is not only one of the top actresses of our time but will breathe new life into such a classic role so many people know and are familiar with. She will truly do justice to such an excellent role in theatre and will hands down be a highlight of the entire production. Also, after the small drama about the casting of its title role, Annie is looking all the good PR it can seem to get. Not sure what drama we are talking about? Check out our argument article here on the casting of Annie’s title role.

I also think it is important to mention a quote Finneran said upon receiving her 2012 Tony Award for her role in Promises, Promises:

“With the world being so fast right now, I just want to remind you to focus on what you love because it is the greatest passport and it is the greatest roadmap to an extraordinary blissful life”

I think this only furthers the point of this excellent casting for such an unforgettable Broadway role. Katie Finneran – we cannot wait!
