Corbin Bleu to Return to Broadway in Godspell
Prepare ye for a new Godspell on Broadway! Broadway’s Godspell, currently playing at the Circle in the Square Theatre, is about to get a little shaken up. With time running out slowly on Hunter Parrish’s contract, many have wondered for the past few weeks now if Godspell would replace his large name with another. Well, today that question was answered by announcing to the theatre community Corbin Bleu will return to Broadway to star in Godspell.
Godspell is “a musical based upon the Gospel according to St. Matthew”. The famous one liner about this musical really says it all. Godspell is a musical thats a series of verses from the Gospel according to Matthew and puts them into song to create the musical we know today. However, don’t mind the fact that three of the verses are only recorded in the Gospel according to Luke! (Awkward) Anyways, the musical is fun and most definitely one of the most unique productions around especially with the music for the show. The show also features a lot of your favorite characters such as Jesus, Judas, Mary and others in a fun ensemble that bring to life great song and music in one epic show.
Hunter Parrish has been attached to the production since it began on Broadway and is currently playing the role of Jesus. However, his contract expires April 15th as Parrish must return to filming for the hit television show Weeds in which he stars. Many have wondered if Godspell was going to replace Parrish with a big name or not considering the production in recent weeks had been taking hard production costs along with small ticket sales. Godspell today announced that Corbin Bleu will take over the role of Jesus in Godspell come April 17th on Broadway.
Corbin Bleu made his Broadway debut as Usnavi in the hit Broadway show In The Heights a few years back. The 23 year old rose to fame after playing the character of Chad Danforth in the hit High School Musical trilogy of movies produced by Disney. Since then, he has also starred in a variety of other movies, television films and music concerts. His talent and enthusiasm come to life on stage unlike many other performers which only help highlight the true talent he already carries. Bleu will be sure to bring a new crowd to the Broadway production of Godspell but also I think truly breathe a new life into the show. His energy only ever bounces to those around him and I’m sure in a lively production like Godspell, this can only work out for the best.
Stephen Schwartz said the following in a statement about the announcement today:
“I know Corbin Bleu has a special affinity for Godspell, and with his great talent, charisma, and radiant energy, I know he will be terrific in the show. I am very much looking forward to working with him and seeing him as our new Jesus.”
The rest of the cast of Godspell includes Uzo Aduba, Nick Blaemire, Celissa Henderson, Morgan James,Joaquina Kaulkango, Eric Michael Krop, Telly Leung, Corey Mach, Julia Mattison, Lindsay Mendez, George Salazar, Wallace Smith as Judas and Anna Marie Perez De Tagle. As far as Luner on Theatre is aware, no other current changes have been made in casting.
Godspell is a musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. The musical began as a project of Stephen Schwartz’s when he was still attending Carnegie Mellon University. The production moved to Off-Broadway in 1971 where it played for 5 years before transferring to Broadway in 1976. Broadway producer Ken Davenport is at the lead for producing this musical’s epic return to Broadway. This production of Godspell is being directed by Daniel Goldstein and features choreography by Christopher Gattelli. Goldstein was at hand behind the well known production of Godspell that took place at Paper Mill Playhouse in 2006 and has reunited his team of designers for this Broadway production.
The rest of the creative team for Godspell includes a scenic design by David Korins, costume design by Miranda Hoffman, lighting design by David Weiner, sound design by Andrew Keister, orchestrations by Michael Holland and musical direction by Charlie Alterman.
