Rob Ashford will Lead Disney’s Alice In Wonderland to the Stage
While Disney’s current productions on Broadway such as The Lion King, Mary Poppins or the new Newsies musical continue to bring the company much success, Disney Theatricals is continuing to work behind the scenes on their next big move; whether that be in London or here in New York. And one of their projects is taking a step forward today as Disney announces the exciting news that Rob Ashford will helm Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland which is now headed to the stage.
Rob Ashford is a Tony Award winning director and choreographer. While only winning once, he has been nominated seven times for the Tony Award as well as being nominated five times for the Olivier Awards in London. He has worked on Broadway on such notable productions as Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Wedding Singer, Cry Baby and Promises, Promises. His most recent works include directing and choreographing the current revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Starring Nick Jonas) and choreography for Evita (Starring Ricky Martin). And In London, his production of Anna Christie just scored 4 Olivier nominations. Rob Ashford is no stranger to the theatre community here on Broadway or in London.
He has now joined the team to bring Tim Burton’s of Alice in Wonderland to life on stage through Disney’s Theatricals. Ashford will direct and choreograph the production. The new stage adaptation will follow the story line of the 2010 hit film by Burton as opposed to the 19th century novels which inspired it all. Ashford joins Linda Woolverton writing the book based on her screenplay and Richard D. Zanuck, one of the producers of the film and an executive producer of the legit tuner who have already been brought on board by Disney Theatricals. Tim Burton is also working closely with Disney to produce the musical on stage directly from his hit film. He will work closely with all designers to execute the vision of his film to the stage.
Disney Theatricals is definitely taking baby steps with this production still not announcing any major news about it involving casting, an official opening or even where the production will begin. It is expected that Alice in Wonderland will debut in London before it makes it’s way to Broadway. That way Disney will be able to work out major points and gain excitement towards the production before it transfers to Broadway whenever that is. Disney also has a few other works in progress for the Broadway stage but it looks as though Alice may be taking the top slot at least for now. Disney is being cautious though especially after the recent flop of Wonderland last season on Broadway. (Another current modern day Alice in Wonderland spin off)
