Extra! Extra! Disney’s Newsies Extends Through Summer 2012

It seems as though the world may know sooner rather then later the power these Disney newsboys have on Broadway. Less then a full week into previews, it seems as though Disney’s newsboys may be Broadways biggest and best headline yet! Today, Disney’s Theatrical’s announced Newsies would extend beyond the original limited engagement of 101 performances to now play through the Summer of 2012 on Broadway.

Newsies is a new stage musical brought to you by Disney Theatricals. The production features a score by eight time Academy Award Winner Alan Menken (music) and Jack Feldman(lyrics) with a book by four time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. The renown production was directed by Tony Nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli. Newsies is the epic story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 which lasted from July 20th to August 2nd. After not being protected from the union during this time period, the newsboys famous walk off the stands has been turned into an epic Disney picture film that is unforgettable. Filled with some of your favorite songs and dances such “Seize the Day“, “King of New York” and “Santa Fe“, Newsies is a Disney movie for the ages. The movie completely flopped at the box office in its 1992 debut but had gained a cult following since which had called for a stage production of the show.

Lottery Rush for Newsies' First Preview

While Disney has insisted all along the production will only run for 101 performances through June 10th, the Broadway giant today in New York proudly announced the production would be extending now through August 19th, 2012. During it’s first six previews on Broadway, Disney’s Newsies has grossed a total of $735,991. This is just about $100,000 short of the theatre’s record which was sent by RENT during eight performances in it’s final week on Broadway in August of 2008 which was $864,321. Unbelievable that Disney’s newest production is almost breaking the record set by a major Broadway show that ran for 12 years. The power of the newsboys Disney has generated is truly unmatched by anything on Broadway.

I have been watching the social networking scene on Newsies even before it began on Broadway which has been strong promoting itself and bringing along fans and followers for an unbelievable ride it seems no one expected from Paper Mill. However, since beginning previews there has been not one bad word about Disney’s Newsies anywhere to be found. Try searching for one – you can’t find it. It seems as though this production is scoring across the board not only with the theatre community but with everyone who has the chance to experience it. The type of enthusiasm seen by people for Newsies is unmatched by any production on Broadway right now or any show in recent years. The show has created an excitement people have not only longed for but had for years for such a picture perfect production to come to Broadway. Newsies is truly a one of a kind headline.

Jeremy Jordan (Bonnie & Clyde) leads the Newsies to victory once again as Jack Kelly.John Dossett (2003 revival of Gypsy) stars as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay (Little House on the Prairie) plays Katherine Plumber, Capathia Jenkins (The Civil War; The Look of Love; Caroline, or Change; and Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me) as Medda, Ben Fankhauser (Spring Awakening national tour) as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Mary Poppins) as Crutchie and Lewis Grosso (Mary Poppins) andMatthew Schechter (Elf) alternating the role of Les.

The ensemble of Newsiesfeatures Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Kyle Coffman, Mike Faist, Michael Fatica, Julie Foldesi, Garett Hawe, Thayne Jasperson, Evan Kasprzak, Jess Le Protto, Stuart Marland, Andy Richardson, Jack Scott, Ryan Steele, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Ephraim Sykes, Laurie Veldheer, Alex Wong and Stuart Zagnit.

For the Broadway production, Disney has also put a lottery system into place for every show two and a half hours before the production. Working like most other Broadway lotteries, winners will be drawn two hours before each performance and winners can claim up to two tickets each for $30 in cash only. There will be no lottery for the production on Opening Night.

It looks as though Disney’s Newsies will carry the banner through New York for longer then expected now! The production is now officially extended through August 19th, 2012 at the Nederlander Theatre. The production officially opens March 29th. So make sure you make your way down to 41st street at The Nederlander Theatre in New York City and experience the boys who changed the world with their voice!
