Seize the Day: Disney’s Newsies Begins Broadway Run
Open the gates and Seize the Day! The day has finally arrived which many have waited for now for either the past few months or the past 2 decades. The hit Disney movie musical Newsies, brought to life earlier this year in an acclaimed run at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey, begins previews today on Broadway for it’s limited run engagement at The Nederlander Theatre.
Newsies is a new stage musical brought to you by Disney Theatricals. The production features a score by eight time Academy Award Winner Alan Menken (music) and Jack Feldman(lyrics) with a book by four time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. The renown production was directed by Tony Nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli. Newsies is the epic story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 which lasted from July 20th to August 2nd. After not being protected from the union during this time period, the newsboys famous walk off the stands has been turned into an epic Disney picture film that is unforgettable. Filled with some of your favorite songs and dances such “Seize the Day“, “King of New York” and “Santa Fe“, Newsies is a Disney movie for the ages. The movie completely flopped at the box office in its 1992 debut but had gained a cult following since which had called for a stage production of the show.
However, Newsies has even been re-inked so it is as fresh as ever for it’s Broadway run beginning today! Six new songs have been added to the production and three of those songs have been added since the run at Paper Mill and will debut directly on Broadway. The song titles for the three new songs are “The Bottom Line”, “Thats Rich” and “Something To Believe In”. The company did record an original cast album on March 4th & 5th. The CD will be relased later this Spring at somepoint by Ghostlight Records. While Disney has kept the overall same image of the production with the cast that captured your heart in New Jersey, there are a few new faces for this Broadway production. Let’s meet the cast!
Jeremy Jordan (Bonnie & Clyde) leads the Newsies to victory once again as Jack Kelly. John Dossett (2003 revival of Gypsy) stars as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay (Little House on the Prairie) plays Katherine Plumber, Capathia Jenkins (The Civil War; The Look of Love; Caroline, or Change; and Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me) as Medda, Ben Fankhauser (Spring Awakening national tour) as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Mary Poppins) as Crutchie and Lewis Grosso (Mary Poppins) and Matthew Schechter (Elf) alternating the role of Les.
Jeremy Jordan, John Dossett, Kara Lindsay, Ben Fankhauser and Andrew Keenan-Bolger all return as the role they originated in the Paper Mill production in 2011.
The ensemble of Newsies features Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Kyle Coffman, Mike Faist, Michael Fatica, Julie Foldesi, Garett Hawe, Thayne Jasperson, Evan Kasprzak, Jess Le Protto, Stuart Marland, Andy Richardson, Jack Scott, Ryan Steele, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Ephraim Sykes, Laurie Veldheer, Alex Wong and Stuart Zagnit.
Newsies became a huge craze after it’s premiere in New Jersey earlier this year for several reasons. Despite the fact that the film absolutely flopped in 1992 when it hit movie theaters, the movie has since gained a cult following and since that day the 20 and 30 year olds who grew up with the movie have been calling for a musical theatre treatment for the perfect movie musical. Disney finally listened this year and gave the fans what they wanted which has resulted in craze across the theatre community. Quotes like “Newsies is already the talk of the town. And it isn’t even on Broadway” (Newsweek) or “An EXTRA-EXTRA Special Production” (Entertainment Weekly) have fueled a craze that can’t seem to be contained. (Knock on Wood) I think Disney on Broadway has their next hit musical on their hands. I honestly would not be surprised to see the musical extend past the original 101 performances and would be happy to see it do so. Newsies is long overdue for the musical theatre treatment it not only needs but deserves. This piece is not only perfect for the stage but sounds perfectly with our generation. It only seems right that the newsies voices echoe through the streets of New York once again.
For the Broadway production, Disney has also put a lottery system into place for every show two and a half hours before the production. Working like most other Broadway lotteries, winners will be drawn two hours before each performance and winners can claim up to two tickets each for $30 in cash only. There will be no lottery for the production on Opening Night.
Disney’s Newsies however will not carry the banner through New York for long! The production is running currently as a limited engagement with 101 performances only through June 10th, 2012. The production officially opens March 29th. So make sure you make your way down to 41st street at The Nederlander Theatre in New York City and experience the boys who changed the world with their voice!
