Disney’s The Lion King Roars into the History Books Today
The magic of Disney on Broadway services millions of people each year through their multiple productions currently running on The Great White Way in New York. However, today history will be made as the circle of life sets a record in the big apple as after today’s matinee performance, The Lion King will become the 6th longest running show in Broadway history.
The Lion King, based off the Disney animated film of the same title, features a score by Elton John and Tim Rice including all the songs from the original movie including three new ones. There is also a series of songs by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer. Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi helped adapt the book for the stage production. The production is directed by Julie Taymor and features choreography by Garth Fagan. The rest of the creative includes a scenic design by Richard Hudson, a costume design by Julie Taymor, a lighting design by Donald Holder, hair and make up design by Michael Ward, a sound design by Steven Canyon Kennedy and a puppet/mask design by Julie Taymor and Michael Curry.
The Lion King began performances on Broadway November 13th, 1997 and since then, 19 productions have launched worldwide to have over 64 million people view the production and bring in over $4.8 billion dollars. The production has been translated into seven different languages. The Lion King is also one of six shows in theatrical history to play for over 10 years on both Broadway and in The West End. In total, the production has earned over 70 major arts awards through out the globe.
In 1998, The Lion King won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction. When Taymor won for direction, she was the first women ever in history to win the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical.
