2012 Musical Movie Mania

The idea of movies being turned into musicals and musicals being turned into movies is no new concept for either Hollywood or Broadway. Each year there are one to two musicals turned into Hollywood blockbusters. However, 2012 is looking to potentially be the biggest movie musical year yet with plans for multiple musicals to be made into the movie. Luner on Theatre has your 2012 musical movie mania lowdown.

In recent years, some of the biggest and best Broadway musicals have been brought to life through the film of Hollywood. Some of these movies would include The Producers, The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, Dreamgirls and Chicago to name a few. However, with the Broadway stage currently at the top of its A game in recent years, this year’s list of musicals set to have Hollywood remakes is bigger then ever.

Warner Brothers and Universal Studios are the two companies that hold many of the rights for these movie musicals. Warner Brothers is involved in the making of two of the biggest movie musicals of the year both of which are currently beginning or in filming. They own the rights to the upcoming Les Miserables film set to star Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift and Aaron Tveit just to name a few. As well, they own the rights to the Rock of Ages film set to star Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Russell Brand to name a few.

The paragraph below has been added a day after this post was already published due to new developments in the 2012 movie musical scene!

Despite the fact that we published this article yesterday, new developments have already taken place announcing the production of two new movie musicals since yesterday! One of these is Into the Woods which will be produced by Disney. The only details we have on this project at this time is that Rob Marshall is on board to direct it. The second new development is the announcement of Jersey Boys being turned into a film as well. Tony Award winner John Logan is on board to adapt the script to a movie. No other details on this production at this time are available.

Universal on the other hand owns many rights to more musicals they would like to turn into movies. All of the movies listed below are currently “in development” according to a source form Universal. Their musical movie list includes:

  • Wicked
  • American Idiot
  • Jesus Christ Superstar
  • Carmen
  • The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
  • Pitch Perfect
  • In the Heights
  • A Sequel to Mamma Mia
It has become evident to Hollywood in recent years that while movie musicals may not be their usual gig, it seems to score well with the general public in many ways. However, with some controversy recently with the casting of these movie musicals, I find it interesting Hollywood is going to take a stab at some of Broadway’s biggest and best business like Wicked or In The Heights. However, my opinions on musicals being made into movies will be saved for another blog post you should all check back for. Luner on Theatre will continue to bring you everything you need to know about the upcoming development of these movie musicals so be sure to check back. And of course check out the rest of Luner on Theatre for all your theatre news you not only need but want to know!
