Once Upon A Time Players Host A Cinderella Breakfast and Broadway: Past & Present Night
On Saturday January 7th, the Once Upon A Time Players held two major events that would help raise money to benefit their upcoming 2012 Summer Season. From A Cinderella Breakfast in the morning to a night of Broadway: Past & Present during the evening, the company pulled off not only a successful day for their upcoming season but also managed to create an excitement in the community not only with the talent they presented at both of these events but for the bright future this company holds in store.
Once Upon A Time Players is a theatre company based out of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2006 by Brendan Stackhouse, the company has grown from producing one show a year to now between six and eight productions annually. The company describes itself in the following way on its website:
“Founded in 2006, The Once Upon a Time Players L.L.C. are a professional organization that performs high quality theatre at a low cost. Through producing a varied season of 6 shows a year, we ensure that the communities we perform in receive a unique, meaningful, and entertaining theatre experience. But theatre is about more than the audience. The Once Upon a Time Players also strive to give the actor, dancer, and designer a place to practice their craft and even earn some money doing it. In a collaborative and fun setting, artists are able to fine tune and practice their craft and take pride in the end result.”
A Cinderella Breakfast kicked off the day from about 10 AM to 1 PM with a themed breakfast for younger children and families. The breakfast featured a ton of children’s favorite character’s including Ariel with Prince Eric, Rapunzel, Alladdin and Winnie the Pooh & friends just to name a few. There was a short production presented telling the story of Cinderella and the rest of the morning was filled with games, prizes and a lots of fun for the children. Also, a royal breakfast featuring pancakes, waffles, bacon, coffee and so much more was also provided for all who arrived at Cinderella’s breakfast.
At the event the children were able to play freeze dance, musical chairs as well as enjoy coloring while hanging out with their favorite characters. After the Cinderella production, more characters appeared including Snow White, Dorothy, Cinderella and her Prince as well as a few more mermaids. It was great being able to watch the young children not only enjoy everything presented to them but be clearly brought into the magic of the whole event. I would have to say if there was a favorite of the morning, that award goes to the Princess’ who the little girls were just eating up. Some of them even arrived in their own princess dresses.
Only a few hours later, I found myself back in the same room but suddenly in a totally different atmosphere as the Once Upon A Time Player’s prepared a night of Broadway: Past & Present. This was a dinner occasion where there was set to be cabaret style performances of Broadway from it’s golden age to current productions still running on The Great White Way. The event also including a buffet dinner filled with pasta, meatballs, salad and more. As well as a switch of food at intermission to desserts and pastries along with coffee making for an excellent atmosphere for the second act.
The cabaret was an absolutely joy filled with tunes that were crowd favorites including “I’m Alive” from Next to Normal, “On The Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady and “The Nicest Kids in Town” from Hairspray. The variety of the show was also something really to enjoy. I never actually found myself bored with a performance as a variety of selections were presented as well as a variety of shows. I enjoyed some of the numbers especially with them being Broadway tunes I really personally enjoy but haven’t listened to in ages.
Some of the other performances of the evening included selections from musicals most recently on Broadway including “Crazier then You” from The Addams Family, “Some Things Are Meant To Be” from Little Women, “Who I’d Be” from Shrek the Musical and “How Lucky You Are” from Seussical the Musical. Also, something that was a nice variety and mix up for the night was including dances. A piece from Chicago and White Christmas were included as dance pieces and all the dancers involved were excellent and truly captured the audience.
My personal favorite performance of the entire evening was “Gethsemane” from Jesus Christ Superstar performed by Robby Haltiwanger. With incredible vocals, Haltiwanger’s performance left the audience quite literally silent after his song being so moved by the performance. I am lucky enough to have seen Haltiwanger perform this song as well before in the actual production it belongs to. However, this performance was just as on par for Haltiwanger and brought down the house.
Overall, it was a very successful day for the Once Upon A Time Players who were not only able to raise a large amount of money for their Summer 2012 season but were also able to create a clear buzz in the room about the talent and dedication this company executes. I should also mention how much I enjoyed the support of the local community for both events. There was a good turn out for the Cinderella Breakfast and the night of Broadway: Past & Present was absolutely packed with people supporting the talent of everyone involved.
