Are You The Next Superstar? New Jesus Christ Superstar Reality Casting Show in the Works

What’s the buzz!? Apparently Jesus Christ Superstar is all the buzz! With an upcoming Broadway revival of the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber  musical, thats not stopping plans now for an upcoming tour of the musical that will apparently travel the United States and then the world. However, there may be a show before this show even begins as Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced there is a reality TV show in the works to cast the role of Jesus for a new world tour.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical follows the the life of Jesus Christ in his final week of life, the chaos surrounding it all and ends with his crucifixion. The musical  also focuses itself on the relationship between Judas and Jesus and the betrayal that has forever defined the world.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced that he has plans for a stadium tour of Jesus Christ Superstar that will kick off in the United States to evolve eventually into a world tour. When asked about the production, Lloyd has stated the musical would “go back to its rock roots”. Lloyd has been in contact with major artists world wide and is now beginning to take his next steps to make this actually happen. However, Webber is returning to an idea he has touched upon many times before to cast the role of Jesus in this upcoming production.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is now in talks to create a reality TV casting program for the upcoming world tour to find someone who would play the role of Jesus. The idea of a reality casting TV program for a musical is no new concept to Webber who was involved in the creation of such program back in 2005. Creating the program How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? to find the lead of the 2005 London revival of The Sound of Music, Webber has continued this tradition with Grease: You’re the One that I Want for the 2007 Broadway revival of Grease and most recently with the new production of The Wizard of Oz currently playing in London. He has also created such programs as Any Dream Will Do to cast Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as well as I’d Do Anything to cast a production of Oliver! I wonder if Webber’s new program to cast Jesus Christ Superstar will be called Superstar or something along the lines of that? Only time will be able to tell.

Webber is very excited for the new production having been quoted as saying the following when asked about it:

“Every major artist I’ve spoken to has said they want to be in it. I’m not going to name names, but I’m getting demo tapes from some of the top artists in the world. It’s extraordinary. We want to play 200 arenas in America and they are planning the route for the U.S. tour already. Then, hopefully, there will be a world tour, going through the O2 in England. I’m very excited about it.” (Playbill)

And of course, who could forget that Jesus Christ Superstar will be receiving a Broadway revival later this Spring. The production, which will be transferring from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, has travel to California to play in the La Jolla Playhouse and will be making it’s way to Broadway later this season at the Neil Simon Theatre on 52nd Street.
