And with much buzz already taking place about this upcoming production, it looks as though Disney is still planning on having a little bit of a surprise factors for those who come to check out this Broadway production. How so? Luner on Theatre has learned that the upcoming Disney production of Newsies will include additional songs from its regional run earlier this year at Paper Mill Playhouse.

Newsies the Musical is a new stage musical brought to you by Disney Theatricals. The production features a score by eight time Academy Award Winner Alan Menken (music) and Jack Feldman(lyrics) with a book by four time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein. The renown production was directed by Tony Nominee Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli. Newsies is the epic story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 which lasted from July 20th to August 2nd. After not being protected from the union during this time period, the newsboys famous walk off the stands has been turned into an epic Disney picture film that is unforgettable. Filled with some of your favorite songs and dances such “Seize the Day“, “King of New York” and “Santa Fe“, Newsies is a Disney movie for the ages. The movie completely flopped at the box office in its 1992 debut but had gained a cult following since which had called for a stage production of the show.

Luner on Theatre learned about additional Newsies songs the other day via Alan Menken’s Twitter Account. The other day he tweeted:

“@AIMenken: LONG TIME NO TWEET! Up to my eyeballs in MIRROR MIRROR scoring, new NEWSIES songs, LEAP OF FAITH possibilities and…oh yeah…the HOLIDAYS!”

This is exciting in the sense knowing that Disney is still working and reworking major aspects of Newsies for its much awaited Broadway debut this Spring. The creative team of Alan Menken, Jack Feldman and Harvey Fierstein already had worked new some new pieces to the original score which includes major hits such as “Carrying the Banner”, “Seize the Day”, “Santa Fe” and “King of New York” just to name a few.

Disney has not announced casting yet for the upcoming Broadway production but an announcement is expected shortly. However, it is expected that much of the regional cast will transfer with the production to Broadway.
