Disney’s Newsies! The Musical Prepares To Open at Paper Mill Playhouse
Open the Gates and Seize the Day! The much awaited stage adaptation of Disney’s hit movie Newsies! is making its way to the stage later this week! And Luner on Theatre has not given you any sneak peeks into the workings of this epic and new Disney production! So, sit back, relax, maybe even grab the paper (Ha!) and enjoy as Luner on Theatre gives you a sneak peek into the workings of yet another epic Disney production Newsies! The Musical!
Disney announced Newsies would make its stage premiere at Paper Mill Playhouse in early 2011. Luner on Theatre was actually one of the first theatre news sources to bring you this story which you can see here. The story follows that of the real Newsboys Strike of 1899 which lasted from July 20th to August 2nd. After not being protected from the union during this time period, the newsboys famous walk off the stands has been turned into an epic Disney picture film that is unforgettable. Filled with some of your favorite songs and dances such “Seize the Day“, “King of New York” and “Santa Fe“, Newsies is a Disney movie for the ages. However, very few people seem to know of this classic gem of a movie. So, Disney is bringing this one to the stage!
Leading the creative team off is surprise surprise Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Sister Act, Little Mermaid) (Pictured Right) who not only wrote the original music for this movie musical but is teaming up with Jack Feldman (lyrics) to write some new original pieces for this stage adaptation. Dont worry though folks! All your favorite Newsies classics from the film will be featured in this stage production. Harvey Fierstein has written a new book for this production. The production is being directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (The Will Rogers Follies, Brooklyn the Musical, Grey Gardens) (Pictured Below) and choreographed by Tony nominee Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific, Altar Boyz, Silence: the Musical).
What an all star creative team! But it doesn’t stop there! Let’s meet the all star cast! Leading it all is Jeremy Jordan (West Side Story) in the role of Jack Kelly. Others that are leading in this production as Ben Fankhauser in the role of Davey, RJ Fattori and Vincent Agnello sharing the role of Les, Andrew Keenan-Bolger in the role of Crutchie; Tommy Bracco in the role of Spot Conlon, Brendon Stimson in the role of Oscar Delancey, Mike Faist in the role of Morris Delancey, Aaron J. Albano, Ryan Breslin, Kyle Coffman, Max Ehrich (Jack U/S), JP Ferreri, Garett Hawe, Corey Hummerston, Evan Kasprzak, Andy Richardson, Scott Shedenhelm and Ryan Steele. Tony Award nominee and Broadway veteran John Dossett portrays newspaper tycoon Joseph Pulitzer. Kara Lindsay plays Katherine which you may not recognize because it is a role created for the stage version of Newsies.
Now here is where the question lies. What is Disney going to do with this one of a kind musical? Should the echoes of Newsboys ring through the streets again with a Broadway transfer? I guess it is a little too soon to say considering the production doesn’t open until Thursday but if you think about it, Disney is setting itself up here for only success. Between Alan Menken’s 8 Academy Awards, Harvey Fiersteins 4 Tony Awards and an all star cast and creative team, Disney is working here on a production that will be one of its greatest in years. I can definitely say countless amounts of fans have been waiting for this for years. I do also have to mention that I think a Broadway transfer would not be taken wrong. It would most likely be highly accepted by many Disney and theatre fans who have been waiting years alone for this stage adaptation. Disney seems to be creating the formula for major success. The only question is now is, Will they use it?
Another major aspect fueling the transfer that Disney is apparently planning is stichkingdom.com which over sees domain registration announced in 2010, the domains: NEWSIESBROADWAY.COM, NEWSIESMUSICAL.COM, NEWSIESONTOUR.COM, NEWSIESTHEMUSICAL.COM and NEWSIESTICKETS.COM were all created on the web. However, if you go looking for these domains, nothing….yet.
SO, Is Disney planning some sort of epic transfer for their latest production? While my guess is YES, No one can officially say. Disney has truly created the perfect formula here though for success and in my head, I think they’re planning to use it. Its kinda like the perfect set up they created for Aladdin: the Musical which played in Seattle earlier this Summer. And if you think we forgot about that one folks, we didn’t! And the production is definitely not planning to fade away. As I think this one should not. What Disney is creating here is a masterpiece of film turned into a live stage production which should have been done years ago. I most definitely plan on seeing this production and will be bringing you more news of this epic production as it continues. Until the echoes of Newsboys ring through New York City again, thats all folks. Luner on Theatre will be bringing you actual rehearsal photos of the cast at work on Thursday to celebrate Newsies Opening Day so be sure to check back for those!
