La Cage Aux Folles to Close on Broadway

The Best of Times are over for Broadway as it has been announced by Producers that the 2010 revival of the hit musical La Cage Aux Folles will shutter on Broadway this season on May 1st.

The announcement comes less then 2 months into the show’s major change up of “names” in the production. La Cage Aux Folles featured Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge since its original launch on Broadway on April 6th, 2010. It had transfered from the West End which is where it went up in 2008. Douglas Hodge also transfered with the production to make his Broadway debut as Albin. Grammer and Hodge departed the production Febuary 13th. Stepping into the roles of Georges and Albin was then Jeffrey Tambor and Harvey Fierstein.

However, a major blow occurred to the production after only about a week into the new faces. Jeffrey Tambor had to suddenly depart the production due to previous surgery not allowing him to perform 8 times a week. La Cage quickly searched for a replacement and then found Christopher Sieber who is now currently playing opposite Fierstein. They have been performing together since mid March and will close the production on May 1st.

By the time the glitter fades, La Cage will have played 433 performances and 15 previews. It is currently playing at The Longacre Theatre which is where it began it’s epic Broadway run back in 2010. Also mentioned earlier; this production transfered from the West End when it was put up there in 2008. The Broadway production was directed by Terry Johnson and choreographed by Lynne Page. It also features a book written by Harvey Fierstein (Currently starring in the production) and music/lyrics by Jerry Herman.

The 2010 revival of La Cage Aux Folles was a major point of the recent Broadway season. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards at the 2010 ceremony. It won 3 taking Best Direction of a Musical (Terry Johnson), Best Actor in a Musical (Douglas Hodge) and Best Revival of a Musical. All major awards and key players to how much success La Cage has had in its latest Broadway production.

Luner on Theatre attended and reviewed the production of La Cage when Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge were still in the production. You can find that review here. I hope to attend the production with Fierstein and Sieber before the production closes for good.

However, there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel! Glitter will soon be on the go as today along with the notice of closure came an announcement of a National Tour. The tour will kick off in Iowa in October and will bring the sounds of La Cage across the nation.

La Cage Aux Folles will continue to play at The Longacre Theatre till it closes on Broadway May 1st. Luner on Theatre will report back with any news relating to the future of La Cage or its soon to be released tour. Until then, Check out La Cage’s Official Broadway Website for more information
