Homecoming; Billie Joe Returns to American Idiot
As the days count down for Green Day’s American Idiot on Broadway, it only seems right a proper Homecoming be given for the production which made its debut last year and forever changed the sound of Broadway. Therefore, it is only right that frontman of the group and co creator of the musical Billie Joe Armstrong returns to the production April 5th.
Green Day’s American Idiot began previews on Broadway March 24th, 2010 and opened officially April 20th. It is currently playing at the St. James Theatre. The show takes the music of Green Day’s legendary American Idiot album and combines some of their other well known music into a show. The characters search for meaning in their lives which are filled with heartbreak, death and love as they navigate an idiot nation based after the post 9/11 America.
The actual group Green Day is an American punk rock group that was formed in 1987. The band is made up of Billie Joe Armstrong who is the lead vocalist and guitarist, Mike Dirnt as the bassist and backing vocalist and Tré Cool as the drummer. They have produced and released 9 albums with their most recent coming out only 2 weeks ago. Green Day is not only a popular band in America but worldwide as their music reaches fans across the globe. They began with much success, declined over time and then returned with a slap in the face to everyone proving they were still the power band they proved to be from their origins.
Billie Joe returns to the production on the role of St. Jimmy as of April 5th. This is seems suiting considering Armstrong is not only Green Day’s frontman but also helped director Michael Mayer write and execute the production. He will play in the role of St. Jimmy until the production closes on April 24th. A role not only fitting for him but more the less perfect due to Armstrongs unusual behavior he usually displays.By the time American Idiot shutters, it will have played a total of 421 performances and 27 previews. I have attended the show before with the original cast and really enjoyed the show. Be sure to check back for that!
American Idiot will play the St. James Theatre until April 24, 2011 when it officially closes. A national tour has been announced and auditions for that tour have begun.
