BREAKING NEWS: Jeffrey Tambor Withdraws from La Cage
In a completely unexpected turn of events, Jeffrey Tambor has decided to pull himself from the 2010 Broadway Revival of La Cage Aux Folles. Th decision became effective after the February 24th performance.
Jeffrey Tambor, who played the role of Georges, began performances February 15th opposite four time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, who plays the role of Albin/Zaza. Chris Hoch, who is the understudy for Georges, will play the role until casting is announced. Casting will be announced soon.
The producers of La Cage released the following statement upon Tambor’s depart: “Jeffrey Tambor was experiencing complications from recent hip surgery and the pain and the challenge of performing in a musical eight times a week proved to be too physically demanding. We respect his talent enormously and regretfully accept his withdrawal from the production.” (Cited from Playbill)
The New York Post reportedly started a rumor that Tambor was not vocally comfortable in the role and was angry about the issue which caused him to depart the production. That rumor has not been confirmed.
