Extra! Read All About It! Newsies Musical to Premiere at Papermill

Disney fans are finding themselves smiling much more these days. Only a little over a month after announcing Aladdin will make it’s world premiere at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre this summer, Disney announced another one of their films will be making its stage debut in this upcoming year. What show you’re wondering? Try he lesser known 1992 Disney musical film, Newsies.

The story is based after the true life event of the Newsboys Strike that took place in New York City in 1899. The newsboys, which were not protected by the union, begin a revolution almost in a film filled with song and dance. Some of the most famous pieces from the film would have to be “Carrying The Banner”, “Santa Fe”, “Seize the Day” and  “King of New York”.

Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Sister Act, The Little Mermaid), who wrote the original music, will return to the piece to write some new original and fresh pieces along with the collaboration of Jack Feldman, who also worked on the film. Four time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy) has been brought along to write a new book for the stage adaptation.  Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun (The Will Rogers Follies, Grey Gardens) will direct the piece making its world premiere. The original film was directed by Kenny Ortega who became well known after directing and choreographing the High School Musical trilogy.

So what exactly is Disney’s strength in launching this new musical? Or their game plan down the line? Disney is reportedly launching the musical and not planning on a Broadway future for the show. They are instead launching it to the idea of it then becoming available to license to both professional and amateur groups. However; if you remember the same thing was said about Disney’s Aladdin which Luner on Theatre discovered has a Broadway future planned for it. So is that the same case with Newsies? Who knows! I guess only time will be able to tell us if the voices of the newsboys will once again ring out in the streets of New York City.

Newsies will premiere at Papermill Playhouse and will be their first production of their 2011-2012 season. Previews begin September 15th with an official opening set for September 25th running through October 16th. Luner on Theatre will have more information on the production as in unfolds.
